When you need a custom solution:

 

· Your equipment has non-standard specs (e.g., a pressure sensor with a 0–50,000 psi range, far beyond typical calibrators).

· Tests involve unique conditions (e.g., corrosive fluids, high vibration, or vacuum).

· Regulatory bodies (e.g., FAA, ISO) require validation for a one-of-a-kind setup.

 

Steps to build one:

 

1. Define accuracy needs: “We need ±0.2% error at 300°C and 200 psi” is better than “as accurate as possible.”

2. Source a reference standard: For high pressure, use a deadweight tester with custom weights; for unique probes, work with a lab to build a reference model.

3. Write a protocol: Document steps (e.g., “heat to 300°C, stabilize for 10min, record 5 readings”), acceptance criteria, and who signs off.

4. Validate with a trial test: Run the calibration, then test the equipment in a known condition (e.g., a controlled flow) to ensure data matches expectations.
